The bus lane works. The buses do not

The lane is painted and policed. The buses that were supposed to use it are stuck in the old traffic.

By Sunita Rai

City desk

Two new bus lanes opened last month. Ridership has not moved, because the buses still run the old routes. The transport office blames the depot; the depot blames the schedule.

Six months of counts show the lane moving more vehicles per hour — almost none of them buses. The 6 and the 11, the two routes the lane was built for, still thread the old road.

The depot says the routes were never re-filed. The transport office says they were. Both operate from the same paper we requested under the public records rules; we are still waiting.
